Post-Event Report:
ALPHA Education and WongAvery Asia Pacific Peace Museum hosted the 88th Commemoration of the Nanking Massacre on December 13, 2025, alongside the Chinese Professionals Association of Canada and Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto.
At 2:30 pm in Toronto, 600 community members and representatives from different levels of government came together in hope and peace to remember the 300,000 victims in Nanking, China who perished during the 6-week massacre, which began on December 13 1937, from the indiscriminate, brutal killing by the Japanese Military.
The program began with the City of Toronto Land Acknowledgement, followed by Canada’s National Anthem, and one minute of silence for the victims of Nanjing Massacre, with an additional minute dedicated to the victims of the Tai Po fire in Hong Kong. Dr. Joseph Yu Kai Wong, Chair and Founder of ALPHA Education, provided an inspirational opening presentation. The program continued with remarks from Her Worship Olivia Chow, Mayor of Toronto, Honourable Raymond Cho, Minister for Seniors and Accessibility for the Province of Ontario and MPP for Scarborough North, and Mr. Weidong Luo, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China. In her remarks, Mayor Chow emphasized the collective responsibility to learn from history, stating, “We must recommit ourselves to peace and justice.”
The theatre watched in profound silence, deeply moved by the Toronto Pops Orchestra’s musical performance and the screening of the highly acclaimed film Dead to Rights, which was originally released in July 2025. The film captivated audiences with its powerful portrayal of the characters’ physical, emotional, and psychological struggles in the face of life and death during the Nanjing Massacre.
The importance of remembering and learning of this essential history is vital as it remains relevant for both the present and future. Two attendees echoed this sentiment:
“The event was not only a moving tribute to the victims but also a profound learning experience for all who attended.”
“I was deeply inspired by the history of ALPHA Education’s unwavering dedication to raising public awareness about WWII in Asia. The music performance, and the film played during the event, left a lasting impression on me and undoubtedly many others. These efforts are vital in ensuring the lessons of history continue to resonate with future generations.”
